First Church in Cambridge - Congregational
("FCCC") FCCC is a brown stone church building, just after the
traffic light at the corner of Mason St. It's directly next
door to the Sheraton Commander Hotel, which has a
huge neon sign on its roof. We rent their parish hall for
our Tuesday and Thursday dance classes.
Please use the front entrance
indicated by the arrow. (The building's back door is
now restricted to users of the basement Shelter.) PARKING is very difficult in the
area. We recommend coming in by T, which is just
around the corner. (MBTA subway, Red line, "Harvard" stop.
See T-in-circle symbol on map above for subway
entrance.) YWCA The YWCA building is a Spanish-mission style building on
Temple St., which is a tiny one-block street in Central
Square, Cambridge, off Mass. Ave., right between Prospect
and Inman Streets. PARKING is fairly easy in the area
immediately after work, but becomes moderately challenging
after that because of the many Wednesday night church
services nearby. (There are 33 churches in Central Square!)
In any case, we recommend coming in by T, which is
just around the corner. (MBTA subway, Red line, "Central"
stop. See T-in-circle symbol on map above for subway
entrance.) Map is copyright 2003 Ken Kreshtool. The
map was drawn by us, using data from City of Cambridge GIS
publications, plus info from our own overstrained
noggins. "SQUARE" What is a "Square"?
If you are new to the area, you are discovering that in
local parlance, geographical locations are referred to by
"square" — Harvard Square, Central Square, etc.
Technically, a square is a major historical
intersection where 3 or more roads come together NOT at
right angles (we're not kidding), and, by extension, the
commercial district that has grown up around the
intersection. (Side note: Real estate low-lifes like to
abuse the idea, of course. The prime local example is "One
Kendall Square," a commercial complex whose address is
totally bogus — it's in a completely different
neighborhood from the actual Kendall Square.)

TUESDAY & THURSDAY CLASSES
11 Garden St. (Harvard Square)
Cambridge, MA
![]()
Careful: There are a LOT of churches in
this part of Harvard Square!
It's not the church at the beginning of Church
St. That's "First Parish in Cambridge/First
Church-Unitarian." The names are similar, but it's the wrong
building.
It's not the gray wooden church on Garden
Street just past the old cemetery — that's Christ
Church (Episcopalian). Keep walking one more block.
On-street parking (meters) is free after 6:00
pm, but to find a space, you will probably have to walk
many, many blocks. Harvard Square has many businesses,
restaurants, and movie theaters, and almost zero parking.
Tips: (1) 99% of our students, after experimenting, have
found it much faster to park farther and walk 5 or 10
minutes, than to circle constantly. Average circling time
seems to be about 35-75 minutes. (2) Up Mass. Ave., north of
the Cambridge Common, there are many parking meter
spaces.
Parking lots cost a bundle in Harvard Square —
about $15. That's barely cheaper than a parking ticket!
No longer available: Sheraton Commander Hotel
Parking Lot — next door to the church. Now
restricted to Hotel guests only.

WEDNESDAY CLASSES
7 Temple St. (Central Square)
Cambridge, MA
![]()
Careful:
It is the YWCA building. This is different
from the YMCA nearby on Mass. Ave. — wrong
gender!
DRIVERS: No Left Turns are permitted from any
direction at the main intersection of Central Square.
Solution: overshoot by one block and then start maneuvering
back to the main streets.
Parking lots — there are 3 municipal
parking-meter lots along Bishop Allen Drive in Central
Square that are FREE after 6:00 pm. There is also a very
large private lot on Prospect Street that is FREE and open
to the public after 6:00 pm; it is also used as the Bread
& Circus (Whole Foods) overflow lot. Additionally, on
Green St., there is a nice city-run inexpensive parking
garage ($5 or less), and two more tiny parking-meter lots.
(The Green St. lots are not on the little map above, but you
can see them here.)
On-street parking (meters) is free after 6:00
pm.
